Eight kilometres north of Tanga, a 150-million-year-old limestone system holds the largest network of caves in East Africa — 234 square kilometres of gorges, sinkholes and chambers, though only one 755-metre cave is open to guided visitors. This short itinerary flies you there for a proper, unhurried visit: not a rushed roadside stop between the coast and the Kenyan border, but two full days built around the caves themselves.

A private vehicle and an Arusha-based Super Luxury Safaris’ Guide travel with you throughout, working with the mandatory local Amboni guide inside the cave itself. Expect towering natural chambers, rock formations locals have named for their shapes — a ship, an elephant, a map of Africa — and, every evening, thousands of bats streaming out of the cave mouth into the last light.

Day 1: Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Tanga

Day 2: The Amboni Caves

A full day at the caves: the forested gorge approach, the one publicly accessible cave with its towering chambers and named rock formations, and a look at the vine-draped entrance where tree roots have grown down over the cave mouth.

We time the visit to end at sunset for the “popo flight” — the caves’ resident bat colony leaving for the night in a dense, fast stream.

Day 3: Tanga to Arusha or Kilimanjaro

A morning transfer to Tanga Airport for your return flights via Dar es Salaam, which end the safari.

Season and routing

Runs year-round; the cave interior is a stable environment whatever the season. The bat "popo flight" happens every evening at sunset, so we time day 2 to end at the cave mouth for it regardless of your travel dates.

Practical notes

  • Amboni ("Mapango ya Amboni" in Swahili) is East Africa's most extensive limestone cave system, covering 234 km² with ten separate caves — but only one, the longest at 755 m, is open for guided tours; the rest are not part of this itinerary.
  • The accessible cave involves tight squeezes in places — wear comfortable closed shoes, bring only a pocket-size camera, and leave large bags at the entrance as the local guide will advise.
  • Some chambers are considered sacred by local communities and still used for worship; your guide will tell you which sections these are and how to behave respectfully near them.
