Three days is the shortest mainland safari we will sell from Zanzibar. You fly in the morning, sleep two nights in Karatu, do Tarangire, the crater and a Lake Manyara morning, and fly back to the island. There is no Land Cruiser ride from the beach to the parks.

Hotel pickup is from Stone Town, Nungwi, or the east coast as written on the quote. A Super Luxury Safaris’ Guide meets you in Arusha. Both domestic flights are included. Lodge class on the mainland is camping, mid-range, luxury or high-end.

Tarangire National Park

Day 1: Zanzibar to Arusha to Tarangire National Park

We collect you at your Zanzibar hotel and take you to the airport for the included morning flight to Arusha. The sea falls away; baobabs appear. Your guide continues by Land Cruiser to Tarangire for an afternoon among elephants — the first real game drive of the trip, not a token stop.

You leave Arusha after breakfast and watch the farms fall away — about two hours to the baobabs, the park gate and the river. Tarangire is the beginning, not a transfer with a short game drive tacked on. You ride a private Land Cruiser, pop-up roof up, window seat yours for the whole trip.

Call it elephant country and you are right. In the dry months, whole families use the Tarangire River and the Silale swamp. Giraffe work the acacias; lion use the shade of the same giants you came to photograph. Picnic in the park so you are still there when the light tilts and the herds move toward water.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater

While the grass is still cold we drop roughly 600 metres onto the crater floor. That is the morning that sells the northern circuit. Zebra, wildebeest and buffalo pack the short grass; hippo hold the pools; lion are often in the open. Black rhino are never guaranteed, and we never pretend they are, yet this closed caldera is the fairest chance you will have.

You will talk about this day for years. Picnic lunch stays on the floor, not a rushed snack at the gate. We climb out with time to wash off the dust and pace it so you are still looking, not watching the clock.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park to Arusha, fly to Zanzibar

Flamingos come to the soda lake when the water is right. Woodland elephants feed in the open. Groundwater forest sits under the Rift escarpment. That mix is Lake Manyara, a park with a personality of its own. Some seasons tree-climbing lion use the acacias. We look. We do not promise.

Tell you before you pay: if your flight is too early we skip the park and we do not charge the fees. When the morning runs, it is a committed morning, not an optional extra on the way to the airport, and after the game drive we continue to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport as your ticket requires.

After the park we drive to Arusha airport for the included return flight to Zanzibar. A transfer takes you to your hotel, which ends the safari. Do not book an international departure from Zanzibar the same evening.

When to travel

Season and routing

This is a fly-in mainland loop, not a flight between the parks. Book a morning Zanzibar–Arusha flight on day 1 (we place you on the early scheduled service). Afternoon island flights on day 1 will cut Tarangire to a short evening drive.

Four ways to travel the same parks. Pick one style for the whole safari, or mix nights — we quote what you actually want. Names below are properties we often confirm. The lodge or camp on your quote is the booking; nothing here is reserved until you approve it.

  1. Camping Safari tents, a cook, the night sounds of the park. The honest, close-to-the-ground way to safari.
  2. Mid-range En-suite lodges and tented camps we use most — a proper bed, a shower, and the game still at the door.
  3. Luxury Pools, full-service dining, the better rooms in the same parks.
  4. High-end Suite camps and private houses when the trip is built around silence and space.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire public campsite or a private farm site on the park edge — Super Luxury tents, a cook, baobabs at first light.

Mid-range

Tarangire Safari Lodge, Tarangire Sopa Lodge — classic rooms above the river, elephants on the floodplain below.
