Kilimanjaro & Trekking

Mount Meru is the peak you see from Arusha. Four days inside Arusha National Park: Momella Gate, Miriakamba Hut, Saddle Hut, Socialist Peak, then down. An armed ranger walks the forest because buffalo use the same trail. It is a proper mountain, and a fair acclimatization climb if you later add Kilimanjaro.

Hut fees, park fees, ranger, guides, cook and porters are included. A sleeping bag is not. Town hotels before and after are camping-to-high-end.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Park registration at Momella Gate, then forest and glades — giraffe, buffalo, sometimes elephant — to Miriakamba Hut. This is a walking safari as much as a trek. Overnight in the park hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Steeper trail to Saddle Hut, with an optional afternoon walk toward Little Meru. Overnight in the park hut.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

The summit ridge of Mount Meru

Midnight start along the crater rim to Socialist Peak, a knife-edge with Kilimanjaro across the sky if the cloud lifts, then descend to Miriakamba. Overnight in the park hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Arusha

Mount Meru from the Arusha side

Descend to the gate and transfer to Arusha, which ends the trek.

When to travel

Season and routing

Meru is climbable most of the year. The summit ridge can ice in the dry months. Armed park rangers accompany the lower forest because of buffalo and elephant.

Choose your stay style

Four ways to travel the same parks. Pick one style for the whole safari, or mix nights — we quote what you actually want. Names below are properties we often confirm. The lodge or camp on your quote is the booking; nothing here is reserved until you approve it.

  1. Camping Safari tents, a cook, the night sounds of the park. The honest, close-to-the-ground way to safari.
  2. Mid-range En-suite lodges and tented camps we use most — a proper bed, a shower, and the game still at the door.
  3. Luxury Pools, full-service dining, the better rooms in the same parks.
  4. High-end Suite camps and private houses when the trip is built around silence and space.

Arusha or Moshi — the night before and after the climb

Camping

We do not camp in town. You need a proper bed, a shower and a breakfast before the gate.

Mid-range

Planet Lodge, Mvuli Hotel, or a similar Arusha / Moshi hotel on bed and breakfast.

Luxury

Gran Meliá Arusha, Arusha Coffee Lodge — a quieter garden night before Machame or Marangu.

High-end

Legendary Lodge, Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge — small, private houses when the climb is part of a longer high-end safari.

On Mount Meru

Camping

Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut — park huts, not tents. There is no lodge alternative on the mountain.

Mid-range

The same park huts. Meru does not offer private rooms on the trail.

Luxury

The same park huts. Save luxury for Arusha the night before and after.

High-end

The same park huts. High-end nights belong in Arusha, not on the ridge.

  • This is Arusha National Park, not Kilimanjaro. Park fees, hut fees, ranger and mountain crew are included.
  • Summit day is still a midnight start. Age and fitness rules follow park guidance.
  • Sleeping bag is not included.
