3 Day Ol Doinyo Lengai Trek

3 days Starts Arusha Ends Arusha Private Super Luxury Safaris package

Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Maasai Mountain of God — stands above Lake Natron. Three days from Arusha: the long transfer, a night climb on steep ash, then the drive home. It is a hard, loose scramble, not a hut-to-hut trek. We only run it when the volcano is in a condition local guides will accept.Your Super Luxury driver stays with the vehicle. The climb itself is with a local mountain guide. Camp or simple lodge nights at Natron are included as named on the quote.

  1. Start Arusha (Day 1)
  2. Ol Doinyo Lengai (Day 2) Land Cruiser
  3. End Arusha (Day 3) Land Cruiser

Day by day

Day 1

Arusha to Lake Natron

Drive north through Maasai country to Lake Natron — soda flats, flamingos when the water is right, and the volcano as a grey cone on the skyline. Afternoon at the waterfalls or the lake shore if time and heat allow.

Overnight: a Natron camp

Arusha to Lake Natron
Day 2

Night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai

Start in the dark, climb the steep ash cone, and descend before the slope becomes too hot. This is not a Kilimanjaro-style path. It is hands, scree, and a local guide who knows when to turn around.

Rest at camp in the afternoon. Overnight at a Natron camp.

Day 3

Lake Natron to Arusha

Drive back to Arusha, which ends the trek. Dust, distance, and a shower you will think about for the last hour of the road. The clock tower, a bed, and a Super Luxury Safaris Team that still answers after the volcano.

When to travel

Season and routing

Lengai is an active volcano. Ash and loose scree are normal. We cancel or turn around if the mountain is too active. Night climbing is the standard because the slope is too hot by day.

Where you sleep

Choose your stay style

Four ways to travel the same parks. Pick one style for the whole safari, or mix nights — we quote what you actually want. Names below are properties we often confirm. The lodge or camp on your quote is the booking; nothing here is reserved until you approve it.

  1. Camping Safari tents, a cook, the night sounds of the park. The honest, close-to-the-ground way to safari.
  2. Mid-range En-suite lodges and tented camps we use most — a proper bed, a shower, and the game still at the door.
  3. Luxury Pools, full-service dining, the better rooms in the same parks.
  4. High-end Suite camps and private houses when the trip is built around silence and space.

Lake Natron

Camping

A simple Natron campsite — this is the honest way to sleep before a night climb.

Mid-range

Lake Natron Tented Camp or a similar Maasai-country camp with beds and a mess tent.

Luxury

A small Natron lodge with en-suite tents when you want a shower after the ash.

High-end

There is no crater-lodge equivalent at Natron. If you want high-end nights, we place them in Karatu before and after this trek.

Before you book

Practical notes

  • This is not Kilimanjaro. There are no park huts and no porter army. Expect a steep, loose night climb with a local Maasai guide.
  • The summit is often in the dark. Sunrise is on the way down if timing holds.
  • Village and cultural fees for the Natron side are included as listed on the quote. A sleeping bag is not.
